Cost saving thanks to the improved efficiency and tool life of the cutting edge

Challenge

The customer manufactures work pieces for the food industry. So far, it has been using a low-cost DCMT 11T304 ISO insert to do this. The customer’s challenge was to achieve a cutting depth of 4.9 mm. An optimization analysis carried out by UTILIS resulted in a cost saving with an insert of its own multidec® brand, with which a longer tool life can be achieved.

Solution

The DCMT 11T304 ISO insert has now been replaced with the multidec®-CUT 3000 system. This system is particularly suitable for use on Swiss-type lathes, such as a Citizen Cincom C32 in this case. Particularly the G-Line insert with the “GM20” chip breaker can utilise its strengths to the full, since it is predestined for grooving and turning with large cutting depths.

Result

The result is significant process optimization. The cutting edge that is used makes both higher cutting speeds and also an increased feed rate. Despite the tool costs being higher, the customer was able to achieve a significant cost saving thanks to the improved efficiency and tool life of the cutting edge – in this case 1200 CHF with a lot size of 3555 pieces. The chip control was also significantly improved, whereby the tool life was increased from 300 to 700 workpieces.
